The answer is a clear yes! A 2025 scientific study from Utah Valley University tested 3D-printed PLA and PETG tools against common kitchen bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella. The study found that washing prints with warm, soapy water removes 90% to 99% of bacteria, bringing them to safe food-prep standards—testing even cleaner than standard plastic cutting boards!
The study also confirmed through mass spectrometry that quality PLA and PETG materials do not leach lead or heavy metals.
Simple 3-Step Cleaning Guide
1. Wash with Warm Water & Baking Soda
Wash your cutter using warm tap water and standard dish soap. For best results, add a small pinch of baking soda to your sponge or cloth—it gently breaks down sticky dough residue so the soap can do its job.
2. Rinse & Dry
Rinse thoroughly with clean water and let air dry.
3. Optional Quick Soak
If you want an extra layer of sanitization, soak your clean cutter in room-temperature bleach water (1 tablespoon of unscented bleach per gallon of water) for 1 to 2 minutes.
WARNING:
🚫 DO NOT PUT IN THE DISHWASHER: High heat and hot water cycles will warp and ruin your 3D-printed cutters. Gentle handwashing is all you need to keep them clean, safe, and cutting perfectly!
